Sofa Bed Dilemma

Being in a three bed house we have the usual dilemma - what to do when we have people to stay. Not that it happens very often, but as our boys have a bedroom each, there is literally nowhere for our guests to stay. We've debated many times how to get around this, we've had long detailed plans about how we are going to put the boys together in one room, have a playroom, have a guest room, an office and the like,  but we've never come to an agreement. The thing is that if we put the boys together in one room, the "spare" room would just become a nothing room with drying, laptops, junk and general dumped stuff. Instead we've decided to get a stylish sofa bed like these ones at Tesco.

So what we propose to do is when Son 2 is in his own bed (shouldn't be too long now) rather than cot (how much room do cots take up?!) there will be space in his room to pop a smallish sofa bed. We have a small sofa (excess furniture from our last house move!) in Son 1's room and it's great for snuggling on and reading stories. I figure that something similar that converts into a bed in Son 2's room will mean that we can actually have guests to stay and possible sleep overs for the boys too.

It's so hard being in a three bed house, but moving would inevitably mean a four bed house with two smallish bed rooms which would be a step down from three double ones. Tricky one, how many bedrooms do you have?

Birthday treats = Louis Vuitton

I never used to care about birthdays, in the days when I bought things for myself all the time, it didn't really matter that I got a few extra things once a year. Now that I don't have so many "me" times, or even the desire to buy things, it's something I look forward to for a while (usually because I can get a babysitter!) though a bad birthday puts me in a terrible mood for months. When I was pregnant a few years ago, I insisted to hubby that I wasn't bothered about presents, since nothing fit me anyway and our house was choccablock with "stuff". On the morning of my birthday, true to instructions, he had got me nothing! I cried for days, I was beside myself. That has never happened since.

Anyway, we had some time to ourselves this weekend, and spent a night in a hotel in Leeds, shopping, stopping for coffee or a glass of wine whenever we felt like it, it was a lovely change. Anyway, here are some of the goodies I spotted.

First, I had a look in M&S as I wanted to get some Cigarette Pants (this is the actual name of trousers!) I've decided that bootcut trousers looks scruffy and unflattering on me now, so I wanted to get some tapered leg ones. I looked in my usual haunts, but as everyone of mine gets ruined anyway by  tiny hands, I wasn't keen on spending £100 on some in my new favourite shops, Hobbs and LK Bennett (more on that later).  Anyway, I thought these ones were a cinch at £29.99, Really flattering and slimming too (my new byword, when I buy something now it has to be "slimming").

While I was in M&S, I spotted this cosy jumper. I tried it on and it really suited my colouring, however since getting it home I have realised I will never ever wear it as it is not, you guessed it, slimming! So it's going back, sorry jumper.

Now I must have been a very good wife this year, as on my birthday I was presented with my very own Louis Vuitton handbag! It is very very lovely, however I am now constantly paranoid wherever I go that everyone is trying to steal it! This is the problem with having expensive things, they end up owning you, don't you think?

I have also made a momentous decision about my choice of shops, I am no longer going to shop in Oasis and Warehouse. I am too old, that is a fact. I have decided that I am going to buy less stuff in better quality shops, so I popped into the lovely LK Bennett (yes the fact that my idol K Middy shops there wasn't exactly a bad thing). It was very expensive which made me scared, but they did have this lovely cowl neck top left in the sale which was £40. I bought it, it is slimming and goes with everything. I love it. I don't know if it's psychological or not, but it seems like a really good cut and fits me far better than a similar item at Oasis/Warehouse. The annoying thing is though, it's handwash only, does anyone actually ever do that?!

I'm all into collars at the moment, to spice up an outfit. I have a Baukjen black dress coming my way soon so I am looking for some accessories to dress it up a bit. I was reading my fav fashion blog Style Guile this morning, and the lovely Beth recommended the great collars in H & M at the moment. Sadly I can't see anything online, but I know they have them, so it might be another trip into Leeds (poor me) to seek some out!

What is your favourite shop and why?

Thrifty Thursday - is it goodbye?

I've been sadly neglectful of my blog recently though for happy reasons in the main. Over the past year its been incredibly tough in many many ways but it seems like we can finally see the light. Son 1 has now started school
and seems happy. Son 2 is sleeping well and not getting up ridiculously early. I have a part time job I love and another job working from home for the lovely Twinkl which fits in wonderfully with my child care needs. There are a few other things going on here and there but in general things are finally on the up. To top things off we've finally made the last payment on a car loan that was killing us every month.

It might seem ironic then in a time when we are doing well financially that I would be writing a post about thrift! However have you ever noticed that it's the people who are really well off that are the most stingy, I mean frugal....

For my part I now no longer worry about money, I buy things without feeling awful and guilty. We can plan for the future and think about what we want to do. Yes it must be true that money doesn't buy happiness and anyway, good health is everything . But along with our good fortune has also come an end to my terrible heartburn, so maybe good fortune and good health are closely linked.

The weird thing is though - now I am much happier in all aspects of my life, I no longer look at online stores, I no longer yearn to buy things, suddenly I don't need all that to make me feel good anymore. So what does that mean, why do we buy things and is it in the interest of the high street to make us anxious and unhappy, is that what makes us spend?!

Thrifty Thursday £9.99 BARGAIN skinny jeans! And bargain Jackpot shirt!

This time last Saturday I was pretty pleased with life. My husband had kindly agreed to take our boys to see the latest Thomas film and said he would take one for the team so I could take a look round the shops, bliss. For some people, spending their Saturdays buying clothes might seem like a normal weekly activity, but I suspect not many of those people are reading this blog. Even so, I felt the usual tug of time wearing away at me, as I knew I only had about 90 minutes and by that time my husband would be pretty much at the end of his tether.

I had a look round in Oasis first of all, to see what they have in for A/W, there were two things that caught my eye, firstly, these lovely skinny jeans.
Cherry Rinse Wash Skinny Jeans - £48
I don't know whether you will be able to tell from this picture, but they are a lovely dark blue colour. Jeans like this are your one denim essential as they can be both dressed up and dressed down, and as long as they keep their colour, will always look smart. It's a really good idea to turn them inside out when you wash them as well to help them retain their "newness".

I was umming and ahhing about spending £48 on them, even though there was a 20% off day. I decided to go and think about it, and on my way out spotted this amazing cardy/cover up. Everyone else must think they are lovely too as there were only 2 left....
Oasis Sequin Yarn Cardigan £55.
It's not a great picture, but in real life it's amazing, full of sparkles and really silvery looking, it would look great with the skinny jeans. There was a 30% off day yesterday, I wish I'd bought it!

Anyway, while I had the luxury of some time to think about the jeans, I popped into H&M and tried on a load of stuff as I was after a white casual shirt to wear with jeans and a blazer. I tried loads on, to no avail. I think I must have very large hands as I couldn't get most of them past my wrists, it made me feel really feminine...

On my way to the fitting rooms I spotted these dark blue skinny jeans for only £9.99!
H&M Skinny low jeans £9.99
I tried them on, and loved them! Although the material is thinner than the Oasis ones, they were just as comfortable and a fraction of the price. I tried the 28/32 ones on and they were ok but I have a 32 leg exactly so the 30/32 just allowed them to drop down a bit more so that the leg fit perfectly. I'm really pleased with them, even if they don't last long it's still a bargain!

I did eventually find a white shirt, from a shop called Jackpot  on Amazon of all places. I had some Amazon vouchers to spend so had a look on there, I know Jackpot is quite an expensive shop so was surprised to see this for only £22.  Anyway, the Jackpot Saselina Women's Shirt arrived today and I love it! Really relaxed and comfy AND a fraction of the shop price!

Anyway, that's all for now!
